MOON ROCKS - PANEL IX
Lunar Rock 15016. The gases released from basalts such as this on the Moon have largely escaped. On the Earth, the gases released by volcanoes have led to the formation of the atmosphere. Basalt formation on the Moon apparently ceased about 3.2 billion years ago and the Moon has been quiet, except for the impact of occasional large objects (see the craters Copernicus, Tycho, etc.).
